An annual recognition ceremony for athletes who personifydedication and discipline drew a standing-room-only crowd Saturdayto Hoag Hall.

   The 22nd Steel City Championships, a competition ofbodybuilders, bikini-clad females and, for the first time, male”physique” models, was hosted by Darlene Tafoya, a past competitorand, along with mark Salazar, owner of the Steel City Championshipsevent.

 A large portion of the night’s competitors hailed from Pueblo andSouthern Colorado, with a few coming in from Kansas andWyoming.

  In bodybuilding circles, Colorado Springs muscle man DonnieBivens was the man of the hour. Short in stature but boasting theperfect combination of muscularity, symmetry and definition, Bivenscaptured the mens open overall title, edging the taller and heavierChris Chandler of Wyoming.

  Chandler was crowned king in the mens open heavyweight division,but his lack of leg development compared to Bivens was the decidingfactor in the awarding of the overall trophy.

 En route to the crown, Bivens captured the the masters (35-45),masters overall, open light-heavy, novice heavyweight, noviceoverall.

  The best in the men’s wheelchair bodybuilding category waslongtime competitor Tony Salas. Joseph Eunice, of Pueblo, was thetop teenage bodybuilder, and Johnny Banning, of Trinidad, andlifter Malcolm Nordaby, of Colorado Springs, were tagged best inmasters (45-50) and (50 and over), respectively.

  Alex Panteleo was the sole entrant in the mens open lightweight.In the mens open middleweight, Andrew Nath bettered Puebloan ChrisMcWhorter.

 In a more crowded field — the mens open light-heavy — areabodybuilder Tony Dionisio placed second to Bivens and local lifterIsaac Ashcraft was third.

  Dionisio also was runner-up to Bivens in the mens masters(35-45).

 The mens open welterweight banner went to Eunice, with PuebloanScot Jelinksi third.

  In the mens novice classification, the light class title went toEunice — with Jelinski placing third. Ashcraft earned the middleclass trophy.

  Eunice, Ashcraft and Jelinski all made strong first showingsamong the more seasoned, and older, athletes.

  Placing second to Bivens in the mens novice heavy was thewell-built Patrick Casteel, of Kansas. Pueblo athlete DavidTidemman was third.

   with nine entrants, the new mens physique open class was a bighit. Donning colorful surfer shorts, the men — true to the modelingM.O. — simply stood there and looked good.

  with a naturally muscular physique and a beaming smile, PuebloanHayden Cole was selected as the best of the group. Fellow PuebloanJimmie Harrison, yet another Abercrombie & Fitch-type model,was awarded third.

  In the bikini competition (Class A) Pueblo West athlete AileenNey Gonzales was the clear-cut winner in a crowded field of nine.In the Class B group, Andria Jay, of Denver, placed first. PuebloanEmily Cooper finished third.

   In the fight for the overall bikini title, the leaner Jay edgedNey Gonzales.

  In the womens figure battle, the masters (35+) trophy went toMisty Fulton, a finely-sculpted athlete from Pueblo West. The openclass A title went to Kimberly Keagan, of Colorado Springs.  AlyssaGarcia, of Pueblo, placed second. The heavily muscled and definedDanielle Hux, of Colorado Springs, earned the open class B banner,with Fulton placing second.

  In the open class C, Angela Tidemann was the lonecompetitor.

  Hux, fittingly, earned the women’s figure overall title.

  The womens bodybuilding masters (35+) competition saw thesuperior build of Springs resident Celesta Hicks-Williams namedbest in the field. Hicks-Williams also captured the bodybuildingopen trophy.

  Two guest posers — Puebloan Lonnie Harrison and IFBB pro BillWilmore — temporarily turned the facility into huge Hall.

  The monstrous Wilmore, who has competed in the illustrious mr.Olympia four times, was truly a sight to behold. Literally as wideas he was tall, the soft-spoken Wilmore’s mass and muscularitybordered on the unbelievable.

  The intermission of the nearly four-hour show featured themartial arts skills of Colorado Fight Source.
