Considered one of the best, longest and most clean beaches available around Rio de Janeiro is Barra da Tijuca. Barra is found on the western end of town about twenty or so minutes from Ipanema via taxi or Thirty minutes by bus and draws the avid surfer, garotas plus the casual swimmer. Pollution isn't a problem and its shear size necessitates that even on congested weekends, both you and your partners (acompanhantes) will have no worries getting a quiet spot of leisure.
